MSU Forestry professor Andrew Finley and Abhirup Datta, Sudipto Banerjee, Nicholas A. S. Hamm and Martijn Schaap have been awarded the 2017 Outstanding Statistical Application Award from the American Statistical Association. Their article, “Non-separable Dynamic Nearest-Neighbor Gaussian Process Models for Spatio-Temporal Data with an Application to Particulate Matter Analysis,” offers an alternative method for analyzing data on the air we breathe. This model helps map particulate matter and show the potential impacts of airborne environmental pollutants on human health. In addition to the improved environmental pollution mapping application, the model is a new tool that will find widespread use in big-data sciences.
