Mark Hansen is an Extension wildfire specialist housed within the Forestry Department at Michigan State University. Prior to his retirement from full-time service in December 2007, he held the position of Emergency Management Coordinator at MSU Extension and Extension Wildfire Specialist. Hansen holds all three degrees from MSU.

Since 2002, he has served as the co-coordinator for Michigan's Firewise Communities Project and has been an invited presenter at the Michigan State Police Emergency Management Summit, the Great Lakes Homeland Security Conference, and many other state and national conferences. He is a former national chair of the Extension Disaster Education Network, a collaboration of 56 land grant universities in the US, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands. In 2005, he received the Great Lakes Forest Fire Compact's Outstanding Service Award in Wildfire Prevention, and in 2007 was co-recipient of the Special Community Award from the Michigan Emergency Management Association. In 2003, he was awarded the USDA Group Honor Award for Excellence by the United States Secretary of Agriculture in the category of Heroism and Response.
